Spotify is set to bring you video - this week. The Swedish music streaming service is set to offer users video content alongside its music offering. Video has been seen within the service for years, in the form of video takeover advertising for free users, and small clips introduced in May last year but this will be the first time users will truly be submerged in both sound and vision. It will be premium content, from the likes of Comedy Central and the BBC and will be available to Android users this week! Those who own iOS devices will have to wait until the end of next week. The new offering will be rolled out in the U.S., the UK, Germany and Sweden.
Spotify has been working on the project since last year, and it has been reported that they are looking at adding entertainment, news and clips from a range of media partners as well as popular podcasts also to be added to the new mix of media on offer. Daniel Ek, founder and CEO at Spotify has described video as an important revenue source for the future of the company and said “We're bringing you a deeper, richer, more immersive Spotify experience”. The introduction of video will undoubtedly encourage users to spend more time within the app and add to the continued growth of video content online.
