Facebook-owned Messenger has added 200 million active monthly users in a matter of months; taking the popular messaging app over the one billion threshold. With this growth, the app is now officially the second most-popular iOS app of all time. WhatsApp, also owned by the social media giant surpassed this marker back in February; so with a combined 2 billion users, what next?
These users are sending billions of messages every day; including a staggering 22 million animated GIFs and 17 billion photos are now sent every month. Huge numbers, I think you will agree?
In a blog post celebrating the news, Facebook said “people use Messenger to connect with the people and businesses they care most about. They make plans, share dreams, send payments, tell jokes, play games, let their loved ones know they’re thinking of them and much, much more.
We’re grateful for all the people who are sending billions of messages every day and we hope to send 1 billion thank yous in the form of a new floating balloon gift that everyone can use to celebrate. Just send a balloon emoji to your friends to add a touch of whimsy and delight to any conversation.”
So there you go, Messenger has hit the one billion mark. But what’s next? What will be the focus now? Well, it is reported that there are now 18,000 bots now available on Messenger. Have you tried one yet? They are pretty handy and here at Coup Media we are excited by this new opportunity for our clients.
